When soldering a mechanical keyboard, safety is paramount. Soldering irons can get extremely hot and can cause serious injuries if mishandled. Always wear safety glasses and work in a well-ventilated area.

You will need a soldering iron, solder, a desoldering pump, tweezers, and a moist sponge for cleaning your iron. If you’re building your keyboard from scratch, you’ll also require a PCB (printed circuit board), switches, stabilizers, a plate, and a casing.

Step 1: Preparing the PCB

Before starting, ensure that the PCB is thoroughly cleaned using a PCB cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Once thoroughly dry, place it on a solid and flat surface. Remember always to handle it by the edges to avoid any unnecessary damage or static discharge.

Hold the soldering iron in one hand and the solder wire in the other. Touch the soldering iron to the joint where the switch’s metal pin pierces the PCB. Wait for a second, then touch the solder wire to the joint, ensuring the wire melts and flows around the pin and the joint

While ensuring the best conductivity, remember not to overdo the solder; too much solder can cause short circuits or difficulty when desoldering.

Step 4: Inspecting the work

After successfully soldering all the switches, it’s essential to verify your work. Check for cold solder joints, which appear dull and cratered and can hamper the performance of the keyboard.

Step 5: Desoldering (if necessary)

If you find a defect or make a mistake, you may need to desolder the problematic switch. Preheat your soldering iron and rest its tip at the joint you wish to desolder. When the solder becomes liquid, quick-press the desoldering pump button. The pump will suck the liquid solder.

After this, you can remove and replace the faulty switch, repeating the soldering process.

Step 6: Testing

You’ve successfully completed the soldering process! The final step is to test the keyboard. Make sure each key registers correctly when pressed and no keys are sticking or missing.
