Keycap printing remains a crucial part of the keyboard culture for computer enthusiasts, typists, and gamers. A keycap refers to a small plastic cover placed over the key-switch of a keyboard. The main types of keycap printing techniques are: pad printing, laser etching, dye sublimation, and double shot injection. All these, however, need the right materials and tools. 1. Keycap Materials

1.1 ABS Keycaps
ABS is a common thermoplastic polymer used for keycap printing because of its low production cost and high availability. ABS keycaps are renowned for their smooth texture, shiny appearance, and the ability to incorporate vibrant colors. However, they are prone to yellowing over time and subject to “shine” due to oils from fingers.
1.2 PBT Keycaps
Among the most favored materials by keyboard enthusiasts, PBT keycaps, are resistant to solvents and are extremely durable. Compared to ABS, PBT keycaps are more textured and have a matte finish. They resist shine over prolonged use, but their color variety is somewhat limited due to difficulties in the coloring process.
1.3 POM Keycaps
Also known as Delrin, POM keycaps are known for their signature slick and smooth feel. POM is durable and highly resistant to wear, making them suitable for highly active typists. However, they are usually only available in black or white due to difficulties in coloring the polymer.
1.4 PC Keycaps
Polycarbonate is commonly used for crystal clear, transparent keycaps. PC keycaps are resilient to impact and have a smooth texture, somewhat similar to ABS. This material is more popular for custom keycaps due to its machinability.
2. Keycap Printing Techniques and Tools
Keycap legends (characters or symbols on the keycap) can be applied by different methods depending on the material of keycap and required durability.
2.1 Pad Printing
Pad printing is a common technique for creating printed legends on keycaps. It utilizes a 2-D inkjet-like process where ink is transferred from an etched plate onto a silicone pad and then pressed onto the keycap.
2.2 Laser Etching
This method uses a laser to etch the legends into the keycap. Laser etching can create precise and clean legends, as lasers are capable of extremely detailed work. Sometimes, the legend is filled with paint after etching for improved visibility.
2.3 Dye Sublimation
Another technique, dye sublimation, involves heating a special type of ink until it transforms into a gas and permeates the material of the keycap, dyeing it through a stencil. This technique is highly durable but applicable only on PBT keycaps.
2.4 Double Injection Molding
This is widely considered the top-tier method for creating keycap legends. Plastic is injected into a mold in two layers. The top layer forms the body of the keycap, while the bottom layer forms the legend. The result is a keycap with legends that never wear.
3. Special Tools
Apart from printing techniques, specific tools are used in the process. Stencil cutting machines are used to produce precise stencils for dye-sublimation. CNC machines can help in creating molds for double-shot injection. Laser engraving machines come in handy for laser etching.
