Before plunging into the world of keyboard modifications, it’s essential to understand the basics. The structure of a keyboard comprises the case (which houses the entire setup), the plate (socket for keys), the switches (mechanisms for key actions), keycaps (keys you physically press), and the PCB, which is the circuit board directing the input to your computer.

The first step in keyboard modification is buying a keyboard. Mechanical keyboards are the best choice for modifying due to their robust and customizable design. Additionally, decide on the form factor; keyboards normally come in full size (100%), tenkeyless (lacking a numeric pad – 80%), or smaller ones (60%).

Keyboard Switches

Keyboard switches are the interiors under your keycaps that register a keystroke. They’re usually of three types: linear (smooth), tactile (bumps mid-travel), or clicky (audible sound).

Modding Switches

To mod switches, you need a switch opener, a lube station, a brush, and lube. Open the switch case using a switch opener. Then, lube the moving parts of the stem and the bottom housing sparingly. Place the spring back, lube its top and bottom, and replace the stem.

Simply pop out the switch using the tool provided, then push the new switch into the socket until you feel a slight click. Hot swapping is advisable for beginners as it is safer and involves less risk of damaging the PCB.

Keycap Modification

Keycaps can affect the aesthetics, feel and sound of your keyboard. They’re usually made from ABS or PBT plastic, with PBT being more durable and resistant to shine. Custom keycap sets can dramatically change the look of your keyboard.

Changing Keycaps

To change them, use a keycap puller, hook it beneath the keycap and gently pull upwards. To avoid damage, never try to force a keycap off.

Keyboard Case Modification

A keyboard case can impact acoustic quality. Cases are typically made of plastic, aluminium or wood. However, some are made of more luxury materials like brass or carbon fibre.

Modifying the Case

Case modification can involve replacing the case entirely, adding foam inside the case, or adding dampeners. Case foam can lessen the echo within the case, thus improving the sound.

Stabilizer Modification

Stabilizers ensure the larger keys on your keyboard stay balanced. Modding them typically involve lubricating or replacing to eliminate rattle and enhance the typing sound.

Modifying Stabilizers

Dip the metal bars of the stabilizer into dielectric grease, ensuring they are well-coated. Then clip and lube the stabilizer housing to further reduce rattle.

Dampening the Sound

Apart from lubing, dampening materials can be used to further reduce the sound. This includes foam, felt, or rubber sheeting; placed between the PCB and the case. Sound dampening results in a more ‘thocky’ bottom-out sound.
